What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is the relationship between a mentor and a mentee, with the aim of reaching a personal or professional goal set by the mentee.
It’s a voluntary arrangement that requires a long-term commitment from both, but can be for a specified time period or until a certain goal has been reached.
Mentor and Mentee roles
The mentor is chosen because of their knowledge or experience in a particular field, and a desire to help their mentee advance in their career. It’s their role to give advice where it’s needed or provide a steer to overcome challenges. They can also act as a sounding board, offering an alternative viewpoint, often guiding the mentee to arrive at an answer themselves.
A mentee will need to specify their goal, communicate with their mentor and be honest about their expectations and ambitions.
Benefits of Mentoring
Mentoring undoubtedly provides an advantage to the mentee – to increase knowledge and skills by working with someone with more experience – but it’s also a mutually beneficial relationship.
As a mentor, it’s an opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills, bring about new perspectives, and be a rewarding experience to help someone excel in their career.
